Published by Abe Ezra Yesterday was the Community Forum, where we presented our project and our poster to students, parents, and anyone else who came. It was an amazing experience, since we all finally got to show our parents and other adults all of the hard work that we have been doing for weeks. We had the opportunity to show everyone our poster, and told everyone the whole process of the project. We started all the way back from the beginning, where we told people that we all decided on doing something to help dogs. When we thought of the problem diseases spreading, we found out in our research that diseases mostly spread through dog groomers. We contacted hospitals to see if they had a cleaning procedure to make sure that diseases brought in by dogs would not spread even more. We were not shocked when we found out that they had an entire procedure, where they take 10-15 minutes to clean all of the rooms. When we called dog groomers to see if they followed this procedure, we were shocked to find out that they didn’t follow any procedure at all, and only relied on the dog’s vaccines. That’s when our idea began.
Our idea was inspired by the health codes that they have in restaurant. We wanted to make sure that each dog groomer followed a good procedure to keep the rooms extra clean. Our organization was called Clenzy Cleanup Certified, where we would certify dog groomers if they met our requirements if we had more time with the project. Then, we let all of the people look at our poster, and then we continued to do this over and over again! Before the forum, we thought of some talking points that we could say as a group, and it definitely paid off. We were all extremely prepared for the forum, and talking about our project was a breeze. From this project, we learned that hard work pays off, and that anyone can think of and execute a good idea, no matter how old you are. We loved this project, and are excited to continue making our video. Published by Max Trilling This week, we focused on taking data. We created a survey and asked a lot of people to take it. We found out that about 70% of people regularly take their pet(s) to a groomer. Of those people, about 70% of them would be more likely to use a dog groomer and pay more for their services if they were certified by our program. Our data shows us that the work we are doing matters and people care about their pet’s health a lot and would feel safer if their groomer was certified by us. In order to increase our impact with this project, we would have liked to have gotten more information about what the standards for our certification should entail so that we could give people more specifics on how much better off their pets would be. If you want to take the survey and contribute to our project, use this link:

This week our group decided to change our idea from creating a spray and learning about cleaning protocols to certifying dog groomers. The way this will work is we will send surveys to dog groomers and see if they meet the requirements that we make, so we can give them a “grade” on their cleaning protocol. Additionally we called more animal hospitals because we know their cleaning standards are high, so we can compare them to how dog groomers clean their equipments used for cleaning. This was really hard because a lot of the places we called did not know a lot about the cleaning standards and how they clean. The next day we decided on a name, “Clenzy Cleanup Certification.” We decided on this name because we are certifying groomers on how they cleanup after the have groomed a dog. Certifying groomers might not mean anything to anyone, since we are only in 7th grade, but it allows the dog owners to trust the groomers more, knowing that the chance to catch a virus is less likely. This organization can grow to be something very well known overtime. Written by Abe Ezra This week, we interviewed a bunch of different different animal hospitals and veterinarians to see what chemicals can actually kill kennel cough. We found out that they use a combination of diluted bleach and a product called kennelsol. We looked on line to see how much it costs to buy kennelsol, and we found that it can be bought on Amazon for relatively cheap, so we slightly shifted our solution to our problem. We decided work on making sure that groomers are cleaning and maintaining their grooming stations properly. We are going to contact more animal hospitals and ask them for help coming up with guidelines. We are then going to make a survey and ask different people at our school who take their dog to a groomer to ask the groomers to take the survey. We will use this data to figure out which groomers are the cleanest and best tu use if you are concerned about the safety of your pet. Written by Abe Ezra This week, we met with some of the faculty members at our school. We presented our solution to them, and they gave us feedback and questions. Many of the questions we got were about what we are going to use to create our disinfectant, so that is what we will begin researching next week. We also revised our solution a little bit as well. Out final idea for a solution to the problem of kennel cough spreading through dog groomers is to make an antibacterial mist that will kill any kennel cough bacteria in the area it is sprayed. This will kill the kennel cough disease and stop it from spreading dog-to-dog through groomers. We will start to interview groomers to collect baseline data to compare that results of our product to. We will ask different dog groomers to use our product and measure how effective it is. Hopefully, we can make a positive impact for dogs everywhere!
Written by Max Trilling Over this past week our group narrowed our solutions we had for the spread of kennel cough. We answered questions on a final problem summary that we might have for our problem. Our group came up with a lot more ideas of ways to prevent the spreading of kennel cough like a hazmat suit for dogs when they go out and about. Another idea we had was a spray that kills the kennel cough batería. This spray was going to be a hand held spray that you could spray in your house so the kennel cough bacteria does not stay there. Our group is aware this spray already exists but it is very expensive and a lot groomers for dogs do not have it. Groomers need to have access to this product because if a dog with kennel cough is groomed in a certain place that bacteria will stay there until it is vanquished. So if a groomer does not have this spray a lot more dogs could get infected with kennel cough.
We need your help! We don't want to get diseases! We are all looking up to you! |
